Los Angeles Kicks Off 2007 Great American Cleanup™ with Major Rally

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Senator Hillary Clinton joined Ray Empson, President of Keep America Beautiful, Ed Pinero, Federal Environmental Executive, Robert Tree Cody, son of the late Iron Eyes Cody, actress Angelica Houston and thousands of volunteers to kick off Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup™ at a City Hall rally and a day of cleaning and greening neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles on March 3, 2007.

At the rally, Mayor Villaraigosa celebrated the launch of Keep Los Angeles Beautiful (KLAB), an education and outreach campaign for citywide cleanup and beautification to support his goal of making Los Angeles the cleanest and greenest big city in America.

“Every day, city crews work hard to keep our streets and neighborhoods clean, but to make LA the cleanest and greenest big city in America, we need everyone’s help. I want to encourage every Angeleno to help clean up their neighborhood!” urged Mayor Villaraigosa, addressing the thousands in attendance.

Entertainment was provided by Stoner Elementary, African Dance Group, “Fly with Los Angeles” performed by Kelly Foster, L.A.’s Best 68th Street School Singers, Los Angeles Unified School District, and the All Star High School Band.

Issaac T. Gooden, Manager Events & Promotions, and Grace Jean, Events & Promotions Sr. Project Coordinator, represented American Honda Motor Co., Inc., one of Keep America Beautiful’s national sponsors. Tony Iskandar, General Manager of Goudy Honda, was also in attendance and donated food and refreshments for the volunteers.

During the rally, Mayor Villaraigosa presented recycling awards to area schools and dispatched thousands of volunteers to cleanup sites across the city to plant trees and flowers, pick up trash, and remove graffiti. Following the rally, Mayor Villaraigosa planted a tree on the lawn of City Hall.
